It’s a lie as old as the first century church: “Yes, it’s wonderful that you have Christ, but you need something more.” For the Colossian church, it was Christ plus philosophy (2:8) or Christ plus mysticism (2:18-19) or Christ plus legalism (2:20-23). Today it is Christ plus speaking in tongues or Christ plus claiming health and wealth or Christ plus hearing God speak new words to you. And you might start to think that you are a second-class Christian because you don’t have whatever it is that others say you need as well. Don’t be intimidated (2:18, “Let no one keep defrauding you”), because rather than being spiritual, these people have actually lost connection to Christ (2:19). God says in His word that Christ Jesus is “the fullness of Deity… and in Him you have been made complete” (2:9-10). He is your sufficiency and He has given you everything you need for life and godliness (2 Peter 1:3). You don’t have to search for what you are missing or what you need to add to Christ. Instead, you need to live out the treasures of blessings that God has given you in His word by the energizing of His Spirit. So rejoice today that Christ is supreme and that He is your sufficiency! And live in His grace and power.
