Philippians 1:6 is a wonderful promise that God has given His children: “He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.” But if this is true, and if God has given us every spiritual blessing in Christ (Ephesians 1:3), why do some believers have such fruitful lives and other believers have spiritually barren lives?
Consider two people on a cruise ship. One person is having the time of his life, enjoying the sights as the ship sails, feasting at every meal on the wonderful cuisine, taking the time for spiritual refreshment in God’s word, and even sharing the gospel with others as the Lord gives opportunities.
But the other person is not having a wonderful time. He finds many things to complain about, he’s annoyed at his fellow passengers, and he stays closeted up in his room. What a contrast! But both passengers will arrive at their destination, right? That’s guaranteed. They will both get there. It’s just that one will have had a joyous journey and the other will have had a miserable trip.
As God’s child, He has promised you heaven. Your destination is certain. But what is not guaranteed is what kind of journey you will have. Will it be joyful or unhappy, fruitful or barren? It’s your decision. May your journey be a blessed one as you walk with the Lord in trust and obedience, loving Him and others (Matthew 22:36-40).
