Many years ago, when my children were growing up, I wanted them to impress on them the importance of loving one another through their words. So I taught them a verse of Scripture that I had memorized—Ephesians 4:29. To make it easier to learn, I taught it to them using the tune of the Marines’ Hymn, and we can still sing it to you this day! “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.” What is interesting is that the Greek literally says, “that it may give grace to those who hear.” Isn’t that an amazing thought—that you have the ability to actually minister God’s life-giving grace to people through your words? And the truth is, we all desperately need that grace. We live in a fallen, discouraging world and sadly, at times we add to someone’s burden with our careless and negative words. Or we can just be silent, missing opportunities to be used of God to minister His grace.
So let’s be mindful today and tomorrow of the incredible opportunity to bring Christ’s love and kindness through our words, to be that blessing to others as we give others grace, to encourage and build one another up. And we will be amazed at what the Lord does!
